How to Stay Fit While Traveling

How to Stay Fit While Traveling

All aboard the express train to your new adventures and explorations! Traveling
one of the most common types of leisure activities we do to unwind and experience new things in life. We travel to discover new cultures, meet new people, and try out new things that give us enjoyment and satisfaction. For most people, traveling is a journey to mental wellness, where we leave our troubles behind and rebuild ourselves to become better.

During the pandemic, traveling became challenging for all of us. People were forced to stay at home and cancel planned vacations due to safety protocols. But in light of the recent developments, travel restrictions are lifted for some countries and people are now motivated more than ever to travel and continue those canceled vacation plans.

But while we explore the great outdoors, our fitness habits tend to fly out the window. Because we want to “live in the moment,” we give in to everything we want to do and forget that our health is still our number one priority. But not all hope is lost. With the tips and tricks we gathered for you, you can build a foolproof plan to stay on top of your wellness journey while having the best time of your life.

Stay hydrated and eat healthy.
Traveling and going to another place means that you get to discover a new kind of culture, and with a different culture comes the opportunity to try new foods. A lot of us think that when we travel, we can count it as a cheat day, week, or even month depending on how long we stay.

Eating is arguably the best part of traveling. To not gorge on all the local treats would rob us of a big part of the travel experience. Without it, we might as well travel in virtual reality. But we do not have to starve ourselves in order to stay fit. Just keep in mind that you should load up on vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins to have a well-balanced diet.

Planning ahead and getting to know where you’ll be eating during your trip is also helpful. You can check out your chosen places’ menus online and do some research on what kinds of food you can order to enjoy the place without diverting from your diet plan.

Keeping yourself hydrated all the time also does the trick to avoid cravings and help you control your appetite. Eight glasses of water a day is the recommended amount of water intake, but don’t let this stop you from drinking more. Remember that water has no calories, so drink more to live more!

Turn your everyday items to gym equipment. No gym? No problem! Workouts do not necessarily mean you need to find a local gym. A good workout session in your own hotel room would already suffice if you’re looking for strength training. Use your suitcases as your lifting weights and your hotel bed and chairs for your lunges and tricep dips.

You may also want to try finding a good steel bar to do your pull-ups, just make sure it's sturdy and stable enough to support your weight because we do not want to turn your vacation leave into a sick leave. The walls of your hotel rooms can also serve as your training buddy. A simple wall plank already strengthens your spine, your rhomboids and trapezius, and your abdominal muscles, which naturally result in a strong posture as they grow in strength.

Exercising while traveling is easy if you know where to look. You just gotta be resourceful enough to think of ways to turn those everyday household items into fitness equipment.

Walk instead of taking the cab; take the stairs instead of elevators. Exploring places on foot is the best way to live like a local. You will get a chance to see things closely while burning some calories. Even if you have the option to rent a motorbike to explore the destination, walking is a good way to burn those extra fats, unless you have a time crunch or the place is too far.

Taking the elevator up to your hotel room is what we usually do. But instead of standing inside the four walls of a lift, try taking the stairs. It is an effective cardio and strength workout. Look for an opportunity to take the harder route. Ditch elevators for stairs in the hotel, visit a monument or attraction that has lots of stairs. You can also take it as another fitness activity wherein you run up and down within a fixed time.

Try adventurous sports. Adventure sports are not just good for the adrenaline rush, but they also help burn calories while you are on vacation mode. Go on a hike up the hills or join hiking groups and activities such as rock climbing. Those traveling to places with beaches can also try water sports, sailing, surfing, and many more.

Staying active while you travel can be done in a lot of ways. There are a lot of activities you can do in order to build a better and healthier lifestyle. You just have to be bold enough to take on these new challenges and keep the right mindset where health comes first before anything else.
